It's That Heat!

One week from now I’m off to Kingston, Jamaica. Unfortunately I’m pretty sure I’m not going to have a relaxing holiday of my lifetime. On the contrary, the trip in question is a business trip and I’m meeting hundreds of clients during my 11 days stay. Needless to say, I should be presentable at all times but it can be a pickle when sweating like a fat bird in a disco (pardon my French).

Us Finns are not that used to such high temperatures as +35 degrees Celsius they have in Kingston during July, and I can’t understand how on earth I’m able to look and feel fresh there. I have updated my set of travel clothes with an airy silk dress for more formal ocasions and I have also found two vintage day dresses made of light cotton. But what else should I pack with me – except of a 50’s inspired bathing suit? Any tips?

I have also no clue what kind of shoes would be in order in Kingston. I’m thinking about opting for a pair of leather sandals but I’m also very attracted to light espadrille wedges. What do you recommend? Which kind of shoes are best for scorching locations?

Ush. It seems to me my friends are much more excited about this trip than I am but I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Anyhoo, I would be extremely happy for your advice so keep that comment box singing.

Second Hand Shopping in Dublin

I have received a bunch of emails from other vintage lovers about second hand shops in Dublin. If you are loaded with cash, you might want to try A Store Is Born or Eager Beaver but if you are a bargain hunter and man made material avoider like me then Dublin has unfortunately less to offer.

There are a few second hand stores in Temple Bar but the selection isn’t anyhow impressive. Some my friends living in Dublin told me thrifting and vintage is not that fashionable in Ireland than it is in other European countries. For example, I’m after good quality vintage dresses, shoes, coats and accessories. Vintage supply in Dublin on the other hand seems to be more about Levi’s jeans, Lacoste polo shirts and band t-shirts – great for those 80’s lovers out there, frustrating for us swinging 60’s fans.

Anyhoo, I’m a frequent Dublin goer and I’d love a tip or three. Would you mind whisking me a note if there indeed were some flea markets worth to visit? Your help is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Off to Dublin

Today I’m off to Dublin to meet my beloved friends, hang out with me wonderful brother in law and enjoy the gig of one of greatest bands in the whole wide world.

It’s gonna be a glorious weekend!

I'll Be Damned

Yours truly is asked to give a presentation at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies. While I’m extremely excited and flattered to be given such an opportunity, I’m also scared to death. I have just finished drafting my research plan and I’m currently searching some financing for my research on fashion blogs. My research plan is basically all I have at the moment, so this means I need to work pretty damn hard during the next four months in order to gather up my thoughts on self-commodification and agency in fashion blogs. Anyways, I thought I should publish the description of the workshop in order to prevent myself doing a runner.

Networks of Desire – Workshop on feminist and queer Internet research

October 13, 2008 at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies

Networked communications involve the circulation of information and data but equally affective attachments, articulations of desire and investments involving time, labour, money and politics. With the development of the WWW as a commercial medium and the rise of so-called social media, Internet users are increasingly addressed as community members and participants that both consume and produce services, representations and commodities. This involves the creation of corporate and brand communities, forms of “micro-celebrity” as well as interactions and exchanges that transgress the regulatory frameworks of site design and user categorisation.

This one-day workshop investigates such networked dynamics of desire with an international group of participants working in feminist and queer Internet research. The individual presenters investigate articulations of and experiences concerning sexuality, consumer culture and embodiment in online spaces with case studies ranging from online gaming to queer uses of eBay, self-commodification and agency in fashion blogs, Thai online sexual cultures, discussion forums and the proliferation of amateur pornography.

The workshop will be open to audience.

Presenters include:

Jillana Enteen (Northwestern University)
Sanna Harakkamäki (University of Tampere)
Sal Humphreys (Queensland University of Technology)
Marjo Laukkanen (University of Lapland)
Susanna Paasonen (University of Helsinki)
Michele White (Tulane University)

Wanna Shop Ecologically?

Earlier this year I was planning to open my own little vintage shop, which would be linked to this blog. As the spring went along, my working life started to get more complex and demanding. At the moment I must admit I just can’t do it all; it’s already quite a struggle to run my other freelance businesses, apply financing for my research, be a great partner to my spouse, maintain my friendships, have some hobbies and keep on blogging so I decided to put my sales agent fantasies on hiatus for awhile. Instead of having my own shop up and running, I’m now collecting a link list of shops that are in one way or another thinking green and provide their customers a way of shopping ecologically. If you think that some shop should definitely be on my list, just whisk me a note at sanna (at) finnflair.com and send me a short description of the shop you have in mind with a relevant web address. Thanks!
