I'll Be Damned

Yours truly is asked to give a presentation at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies. While I’m extremely excited and flattered to be given such an opportunity, I’m also scared to death. I have just finished drafting my research plan and I’m currently searching some financing for my research on fashion blogs. My research plan is basically all I have at the moment, so this means I need to work pretty damn hard during the next four months in order to gather up my thoughts on self-commodification and agency in fashion blogs. Anyways, I thought I should publish the description of the workshop in order to prevent myself doing a runner.

Networks of Desire – Workshop on feminist and queer Internet research

October 13, 2008 at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies

Networked communications involve the circulation of information and data but equally affective attachments, articulations of desire and investments involving time, labour, money and politics. With the development of the WWW as a commercial medium and the rise of so-called social media, Internet users are increasingly addressed as community members and participants that both consume and produce services, representations and commodities. This involves the creation of corporate and brand communities, forms of “micro-celebrity” as well as interactions and exchanges that transgress the regulatory frameworks of site design and user categorisation.

This one-day workshop investigates such networked dynamics of desire with an international group of participants working in feminist and queer Internet research. The individual presenters investigate articulations of and experiences concerning sexuality, consumer culture and embodiment in online spaces with case studies ranging from online gaming to queer uses of eBay, self-commodification and agency in fashion blogs, Thai online sexual cultures, discussion forums and the proliferation of amateur pornography.

The workshop will be open to audience.

Presenters include:

Jillana Enteen (Northwestern University)
Sanna Harakkamäki (University of Tampere)
Sal Humphreys (Queensland University of Technology)
Marjo Laukkanen (University of Lapland)
Susanna Paasonen (University of Helsinki)
Michele White (Tulane University)
