How to Dress for a Cocktail Party

I’m usually pretty sure about my looks and the outfits I wear. Although I’m not the sassiest gal around (heck, I’m far away from the super model looks) I can definitely dress to impress. But the other day I got an invitation for a cocktail party that left me completely puzzled.

I’m invited to an autumn bash of one of the Finland’s biggest publishing houses. It’s some sort of a cocktail party with lots of authors, publishing big shots and of course representatives of the media. Because I received a formal invitation I consider the bash a dressier affair. I have never been to a cocktail party before and therefore I had to do some background research on how to dress for a cocktail party. This is what I found.

Having these tips in mind I wonder whether I should go for business or boheme? Two-piece or vintage day dress? Dilemma!

If you want to find out whether the cocktail party turned out to be a fab fiesta or a complete fug fest, stay tuned.

I think you should go business with a bohemian twist. (bacause your coctail party seems to be a bit on the artsy side)
For example great vintage dresses usually have the tendency to look both sophisticated and original.
I also think that you really can’t go wrong with the little black dress! You can always freshen up the classic with some creative accessorizing.

To bore you even more with this comment:
If I were in the same situation, I’d go with something like this

(without the scarf and the sunglasses, of course. I would also add a nice bracelet matching the necklace)

But hey, you have to tell us what you ended up wearing. :)

Cheers, Ranna! The outfit behind the link is just lovely. :)

I have to admit I’m a tad panicing here. The bash is tomorrow and I’m still not quite sure what to wear. I think I’ll go for a black wool vintage day dress from the 60’s with heels and cute accessories.

The problem is I’m not quite sure where I stand status-wise. I’m not one of the authors and I’m definitely not representing the industry. I guess I’m hanging around somewhere in between and that’s always a tricky place to be in (or fruitful if you are one of those freaking optimists – which I guess I’m not).

Argh! Another glass of wine and I’ll trawl through my wardrobe once more.

Don’t panic! I also think you can never go wrong with the LBD! What a great opportunity to flaunt your black wool vintage day dress (sounds lovely, pictures, please!). Think Catherine Deneuve in 60’s YSL, and enjoy the party!
