Deep Thoughts

Long time no see, I know. My professional life has been in a serious whirl for about a month now and that naturally has had an effect on my personal life as well. I have missed blogging and I have missed you lovely ladies dearly, so I’m slowly trying to get back on track with my blog and catch up with my reading.

In the meanwhile, those thoughtful comments you folks left under my previous article made me think something I consider quite important. I realised that many of us have deep sentiments towards inherited gems that carry so much history with them. Today we are proudly wearing so called high street fashion pieces our grannies and mothers wore back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. But can we honestly think that those high street pieces we nowadays score dirt cheap actually are preserved to our kids and our grand kids? Will some Zara, Hennes & Mauritz or Topshop items be tomorrows wanted vintage items? What do you think?

The thought of not having anything left from my blooming youth made me consider my consumer habits even more carefully. I have stayed away from chain stores almost a year now and I plan to continue on the path I have chosen. It really hasn’t been that difficult I first thought it might be. I feel quite virtuous that almost everything I have in my wardrobe is thrifted (minus my underwear and stockings) but what makes me even happier is the fact that I have managed to cut down so called pleasure shopping.

Speaking of fashion choices, have you made any eco-friendly decisions lately?

Vintage Bag

This leather bag used to belong to my granny. It has been in frequent use but it’s still as good as new. I can’t help thinking of my granny when I stroll around the town carrying my tiny essentials inside this bag. The idea of having something my granny loved to bits makes me extremely happy, and I feel connected with my roots and my family’s history.

Super Saturday

Today morning my significant other woke me up saying that we should take a nice trip to the nature. We made some apple cinnamon tea to the flask, packed our bag full of goodies and drove outside the town to the place called Haralanharju.

There used to be a beautiful wooden sightseeing tower at Haralanharju, but some local loony burned it to the ground one year ago. I’ve read that a local people’s association is going to build a new tower later this year so I expect Haralanharju to turn a busy place in the coming days. Today, however, we had a chance to enjoy tranquility as there were no other backpackers at sight.

Me and my man love humble little trips to the nature. We are not any hikers per se (well, my today’s outfit, vintage dress and Oxford shoes, kinda proves that!) but we love to explore beautiful landscapes and get out of the town every so often.

Today we had our first picnic this year, and we really enjoyed gorgeous sunlight, warm weather, nature sounds and amazing lake scenery over the rocky hill.

I was amazed that there was already a full-blown army of creepy-crawlies out and about. I made the acquaintance of lovely Lee-Ann the Ladybug and she seemed to enjoy skittering around my fingers.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able take any photos of butterflies as they were way too interested in chasing each other rather than posing for me. But ladybugs are as lovely as butterflies, and their polka dotted dresses are always in fashion.

Blogging With a Purpose

FinnFlair received a Blogging with a Purpose batch from Mari Koo of Kulutusjuhla. This kind recognition is really meaningful for me as I have been a regular reader of Kulutusjuhla as well as Mari Koo’s other blogs for ages. Thank you, Mari!

These two wonderful women also blog with a purpose, and their witty posts have challenged me to see things differently:

Hats off to you, ladies!

How to Freshen Up Your Look

You know these days when you feel you have nothing to wear although your wardrobe is full to the brim? No worries, I have good news for you. You don’t have to reconstruct your entire wardrobe in order to freshen up your look. You just need to think creative, and keep your eyes and mind open next time you bargain hunt at second hand stores and flea markets.

It is frighteningly easy to get stuck on a certain style. For example, over 90% of my wardrobe is black. I often find myself musing with the idea of adding a touch of colour to my look, but I always come home with another black item. Go figure!

Lately I have been very inspired by this wonderful post of the lovely ladies of Painfully Hip, and that made me think about my own shopping behaviour. Yes, I’m impatient and too eager to get out from the crowded store, so apparently I don’t take enough time trawling trough those racks. Here’s what I have learned so far.

Wonderful snips are often found after a thorough rummage. Step away from a safe side for awhile and think what looks good on you, what works for your body, what could fit with with your favourite garments and what makes you feel happy. Think about your make up and hairstyle. Would that hideous psychedelic tunic from the 60’s or that daring 80’s jump suit work for YOU? Would YOU and YOUR PRESENCE give new life to these garments? You never know unless you try it on, right? You might be surprised what kind of garments you can actually pull off. Another trick is to learn to see the garment out of the context. Are you sewing savvy? Think about different ways how to alter garments you see at flea markets. Turn that outdated muumuu into a trendy scooter dress or a fabulous two-piece. Saw a good piece of fabric you adore? A few snips here, a couple of stitches there, a hint of patience and you have yourself a gorgeous tote.

To sum up: Next time you do some vintage hunting, don’t just trawl through the racks but spend some time and weigh your options. Who knows, you might end up finding your new favourite piece.
